After 24 hours of purchase, you will receive the corresponding electricity revenue (for example, if the purchase is successful at 15:00, you will receive the electricity fee at 15:00 on the next natural day) and the system will refund the electricity fee and the principal amount of the purchased power plant modules to your member account at the end of the day.

UK-based Tokamak Energy has established TE Magnetics to commercialise its high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology for both fusion and non-fusion applications.

Tokamak Energy's Demo4 facility in Oxfordshire is using HTS magnets - 44 individual magnetic coils made using 38km of HTS tape - which can carry electric current with zero resistance and require five times less cooling power than conventional superconducting materials. HTS tapes are multi-layered conductors, typically 12mm wide and less than 0.1mm thick, made mostly of strong conductive metal but with a very thin internal coating of a rare earth barium copper oxide superconducting material.

The company plans to deploy a commercial nuclear fusion power plant in the mid-2030s, which requires strong magnetic fields to confine and control plasma that is several times hotter than the center of the sun.

TE Magnetics, a wholly owned subsidiary, aims to be the market leader in the supply of HTS magnets to the fusion industry, while also focusing on new industrial deployments of this technology in areas such as scientific research, medical diagnostics, renewable energy applications, energy storage and marine transportation systems (including submarines) and maglev transportation systems.

“TE Magnetics will commercialize our transformative fusion magnet technology and bring it to new markets,” said Warrick Matthews, CEO of Tokamak Energy. “The creation of this new business unit allows us to focus on our core mission of delivering clean, safe and affordable fusion energy while supporting our strategy to grow rapidly in complementary markets.”

“The era of high-temperature superconductors has arrived,” said Liam Brennan, Director of TE Magnetics. “TE Magnetics is committed to pioneering new performance areas for applications that will transform the world we live in today. We will use our knowledge, skills and talent to disrupt existing magnet technology markets and create new markets over the next decade, including renewable energy, science, and propulsion on land, water, air and space.”

Tokamak Energy was spun off from the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in 2009. Last February, the company announced that it would build a prototype spherical tokamak, ST80-HTS, at the UKAEA’s Culham campus near Oxford, England, by 2026 to “demonstrate the full potential of high-temperature superconducting magnets” and provide a reference for the design of its fusion pilot plant, ST-E1. The plant is planned to demonstrate power delivery capabilities in the early 2030s – up to 200 megawatts of net power. This will be followed by a 500-megawatt commercial fusion plant in the “mid-2030s”.
